All rounder Cameron Green made an unbeaten knock of 119 in 111 balls with nine fours and three sixes as Australia ‘A’ recorded comfortable seven wickets win with 14 balls to spare in their first unofficial ODI cricket fixture against Sri Lanka ‘A’ played at SSC grounds yesterday.
It was a real batting display by Australian ‘A’ side in this high scoring game while Western Australian right hander, the experienced player Cameron Green was leading the way with a superb knock in their chasing of 298 runs.
Green who played 12 Test matches and four ODI’s once again fighting for the National side build up good confidant innings in this opening game as the number four batter yesterday.
Sri Lanka ‘A’ led by Dhananjaya de Silva invited to bat first made a good total of 297 for 7 wickets in 50 overs with a run rate of 5.94 but that was not enough to win the game against experienced Australia ‘A’ team.
Oshada Fernando scored 65 in 92 balls with seven fours while Kamindu Mendis scored 42 in 47 balls with four fours and two sixes put on a 87 runs second wicket stand.
The skipper Dhananjaya de Silva who scored 68 in 70 balls hit 10 fours but he couldn’t make sure to carry on a long innings to build up the total and finally caught by Nic Maddindon off the bowling of paceman Aaron Hardie. Niroshan Dickwella the wicket keeper batsman was not successful once again scoring 10 runs in 16 balls and was LBW off the bowling of 21-year off spinner Todd Murphy.Ashen Bandara made 48 in 46 balls with three fours and a six while 19-year-old Dunith Wellalage played a fighting knock of 33 in 30 balls with two sixes made a useful contributions for Sri Lanka ‘A ‘ team. The paceman Mark Steketee finished with two for 72 well supported by Murphy who took two for 53 in his ten overs spell.
Australia ‘A ‘opener Henry Hunt scored 36 while his partner Josh Phillippe who was out first off the bowling of young leg spinner Dunith Wellalage. Wellalage made an early breakthrough in his first over to dismiss Phillippe.
However Matt Renshaw (68 in 69 balls with eight fours and Cameron Green 119 repaired the innings with adding 121 runs third wicket stand while Skipper Alex Carey scored an unbeaten 52 in 51 balls with five fours ensured their victory with 14 balls to spare.
Dunith Wellalage was the only successful bowler for Sri Lanka ‘A’ taking two for 55 in his eight over spell while Pulina Tharanga took one for 69 in his 10 overs spell .
The two teams will meet their second ODI tomorrow (10) at the same venue.
