By Its Cover: Someone Always Knows

By Brian Abbott

someone-always-knows-muller-coverSometimes it’s not so much the cover that attracts attention but the title on it.

Someone Always Knows. What a loaded statement! It begs the question, “Knows what?”

At first glance—and certainly from a distance—the cover may not seem like much. Only the almost-neon green title stands out initially. A closer look reveals the two bullet holes fracturing the window panes. A blurred view out the window suggests the iconic Victorians lining the hills of San Francisco. An apropos scene considering this is the latest Sharon McCone mystery by Marcia Muller.

McCone is hired to clear a derelict house of “undesirables.” The eyesore naturally comes with a history, one that leads to “a trail of theft and betrayal many years in the making.” Knowing this brief synopsis of the story, the cover art with its rundown-looking window (and the visible portion of the wall) proves itself even more apt.

The book jacket synopsis goes on to add another plotline with the return of a presumed dead colleague of Sharon’s husband, Hy, out for revenge.

It all comes back to “someone always knows.” Who knows? And what do they know? It certainly would be intriguing to find out.
