Atheists (and others) opposed to Christianity frequently substantiate their opposition on the basis of God's cruelty, using the violence found throughout the Old Testament as their tool of choice.
Many Christians, including yours truly, have struggled to reconcile the love of Christ found in the New Testament with the God of the Old Testament who orders the wholesale slaughter of people-nations.
