Burma Independence Day

Today is Burma’s Independence Day, marking the end of British colonial rule in 1948. Aung San Suu Kyi, whose father Aung San was the primary architect of Burmese independence and who was assasinated in 1947, spoke with typical brisk wisdom on what must be for her a deeply poignant occasion.

You have to make your hope come true by work. Don’t expect anyone to be your savior. Even if you rely on the government, you are still dependent…
But make no mistake — I don’t mean that we shouldn’t cooperate. Only by working together hand in hand can we realize our dreams and those of our national leaders who tried hard for our country’s independence.”

Another great woman, US secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton, sent a message of support saying:

President Obama and I both enjoyed our visit in November of [2012]. We look forward to continuing to deepen our partnership and cooperation in the years to come. In the spirit of our long lasting friendship, I wish your country continued prosperity and a joyful Independence Day celebration.
