Brooke shields was co-hosting The Today Show last week and revealed new details of her divorce from Andre Agassi to their guest Laura Shields - a well known divorce lawyer who was there to plug her newest book on trying to have an amicable divorce. Shields stated that she has been divorced for 14 years from her just under 2 year marriage to Mr. Agassi- and that the divorce was quick and relatively easy. The bombshell she dropped was when she shared Agassi’s comment to her that had they had children he would have made it more difficult for her- and Ms. Shields’s comment on the show was that was why she wasn’t there anymore.
Apparently it was a difficult union for both of them and in Mr. Agassi’s autobiography written in 2009, he shared some fairly negative thoughts about his ex. One that stands out is “I have a thought no man should have on his wedding day….I wish I had a decoy groom to take my place.” If I were to extrapolate what went wrong in their marriage from these comments I’d say it appears they were not in love right from the start. Having clear doubts, not wanting children and getting out quickly with little drama all point to two people who married for a reason other than love and a desire to be together because they wouldn’t want to be with anyone else.
What’s interesting is that even though both moved on, remarried and had children- there is still some bitterness on both sides. Hard to say why- but perhaps it wasn’t as easy a split as they have portrayed it to be. There’s a cautionary tale here. If you are contemplating marriage, run away if there are real doubts. Otherwise it will probably end in divorce and might not be as easy and quick as this one was.
