“A smile is a curve that sets everything straight,” says a famous quote by Phyllis Diller. Well, I think the tech companies rather like these words, but in a different order. For the tech world now seems to be in a race of converting the straight into curves to bring on a smile on the user’s face. Maybe that’s why the attempts are on to bring on smart devices with not straight, but a curved display.

Moving forward in this race, on 11th December 2013 in New Delhi, LG Electronics showcased not one, but two smart devices with ingenious curved displays. These two products are LG Curved OLED TV, the 55EA9800 and LG G Flex. LG proudly applauds these devices as the world’s first curved OLED TV and world’s first flexing smartphone.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Soon Kwon, MD – LG India said, “We are proud to present LG Curved OLED TV and LG G Flex Smartphone, world’s first curved technology products to India. India is a strategic market for LG and we are the first company to launch the curved series in this market. The unique and immersive curved design will provide consumers with an ultimate viewing experience. We have initiated a wave of groundbreaking innovation for the industry and also created a milestone for ourselves. We have surpassed anything seen before with our latest innovative creations.”

Let’s take a quick look at these two innovative smart devices:

LG’s Curved OLED TV

Well, just a couple of months ago, I wrote about Ultra High Definition televisions. And honestly speaking, when I saw those televisions, the first word that came into my mind was ‘Wow!’. You can just imagine what I thought seeing LG’s latest offering, a curved television with OLED display. A real delight to watch, if only the shows being aired on Indian television could match up with its brilliance.

Anyway, LG 55″ Curved OLED TV (55EA9800) boasts of an innovative ergonomic design that has a full CINEMA 3D support ensuring a superb cinematic experience with its brilliant OLED display and proprietary WRGB technology.

Display: The most noticeable feature of 55EA9800 is its curved screen. This curved screen is based on complex scientific calculations to ensure an equal distance of all parts of the screen from the eyes. This means that no matter from what angle a viewer watches it, the picture quality remains consistent and clear without any distortion of color or contrast. The display is just 4.3mm in width. With its 4-color pixel technology, natural colours, contrast, motion clarity and unique curved design, 55EA9800 promises a superior viewing experience and reduced screen-edge visual distortion and detail loss.

Picture Quality: As mentioned above, LG’s Curved OLED TV uses vivid 4 color pixel technology. This means that a white sub-pixel is added to the usual red, green and blue pixels to enhance the picture quality and color accuracy. The picture contrast quality is also enhanced by independently lighted pixels. This means that they do not need a common lamp or medium and control their own luminance. This helps in giving the pictures a truer color tone and greater realism and depth.

Audio: Of course, a superior picture quality cannot by itself ensure a superior television viewing experience, unless it is complemented by a superior audio quality as well. LG’s Clear Speakers promise to provide a clear and high quality sound with its two channel speaker system.

Looks: LG Curved OLED TV boasts of a super slim form, despite having a curved screen. The rear of the television set is covered by Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CERP). CERP is a high quality, stronger and more durable material used mainly in super cars and aircrafts. CERP ensures a superior finish of the television. LG Curved OLED TV has a unique transparent Crystal Stand designed to create an illusion of a floating screen. The Curved OLED TV also features intuitive touch keys that are placed under the screen. The speakers are thin ceramic film speakers designed to enhance the elegant looks of the OLED TV, besides ensuring superior and clearer sound quality.

3D: The curved screen of LG Curved OLED TV that bends around the viewer’s filed of vision also promises a better and more immersive 3D experience. LG also claims that the superior contrast and depth of the OLED display enhances not just the 2D, but also 3D viewing experience, and unlike conventional 3D, LG Cinema 3D produces a flicker free and brighter picture quality.

Smart Features: The TV’s smart features include SmartShare to easily and wirelessly share content to and from other smart devices. Another noteworthy smart feature is remote control that supports Gesture, Pointing, Wheel, Voice, and Universal Control

Price: The LG Curved OLED 55EA9800 is priced at Rs. 999,000.

Post about the second curved device unveiled by LG, the G Flex smartphone, coming soon.
