Brilliant Backsplashes

I guess it's pretty common when going through a remodel that other projects that weren't a part of the original plan creep in. One such project in my case is a backsplash. Currently our kitchen is painted in a vanilla colored flat paint, which makes cleaning above the stove a nightmare. Are there any good reasons not to have a backsplash?
