As much as I’ve been talking about them and drinking their beers, how could I NOT visit Brasserie de la Senne. I’ve been extremely impressed with their beers since my first sip. Each beer has only reinforced my opinion that De La Senne is a first rate brewery one of the great new breweries driving the beer scene in Brussels and Belgium. Needless to say, my visit is scheduled and I’m excited see their brewery.
Zwët IPA continues De La Senne’s tradition of mixing new world and old world beer styles. Zwët IPA is their interpretation of a Black IPA. It also continues their tradition of outstanding Art Deco labels.
Appearance: Brown/black, light brown head, great retention.
Aroma: Black molasses, chocolate, citrus hints, toffee, nutty.
Taste: Ash, pine, tar, bitter chocolate.
Overall Impression: Zwët IPA has an interesting mix between hop and malt bitterness. The malt bitterness is a touch stronger, but the piney/resiny notes are very present in the medium long finish. Black IPAs aren’t my favorite style, although every now and then one will stand out from the crowd, this is one of those. Bold, bitter, dark and complex, this is a very nice Black IPA.
Availability: This one doesn’t appear to be imported into the US, so look for it in Belgium. Their other beers are imported by Shelton Brothers.
8% ABV
Note: Special thanks goes out to Kevin Desmet of Belgian Beer Geek for sending this beer to me!
