Box Office Predictions: The Wolverine is Definitely #1

Posted on the 24 July 2013 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

1) The Wolverine- 65M Weekend, 65M Total

With almost no competition, the only thing The Wolverine has to battle is the fact that the first film didn’t have exceptional reviews. This film, however, is currently rocking a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, maybe it will do well in the long run.

2) The Conjuring- 25M Weekend, 75M Total

Good reviews, excellent word of mouth, no new competition. I’m expecting last weeks #1 movie to not drop 50% (most films in this genre crumble in week 2. See: The Purge). I’m betting people will be checking it out after hearing from their friends that it doesn’t suck.

3) Despicable Me 2- 17M Weekend, 305M Total

Despicable Me 2 should break 300M this weekend. With no new competition, this film has already been doing terrific business and will just continue that business into this week.

4) Turbo- 13M Weekend, 50M Total

Turbo shouldn’t drop too bad. Reviews aren’t bad, the cinemascore was pretty good. I think some people will check out Turbo this week. The Smurfs 2 doesn’t open till Wednesday.

5) Grown Ups 2- 11M Weekend, 95M Total

Inexplicably, the film didn’t crumble last week. The To-Do List isn’t going wide enough to really affect Grown Ups 2.

6) Red 2- 10M Weekend, 35M Total

Bruce Willis’s Red 2 will see some people who didn’t go last weekend. Poor reviews will balance off an average cinemascore.

7) Pacific Rim- 9M Weekend, 80M Total

Pacific Rim slowly chugs toward the 100M mark. The Wolverine will hit it a little bit, but Pacific Rim has good reviews to keep it relatively afloat.

8) The Way Way Back- 5M Weekend, 10M Total

Steve Carell’s The Way Way Back expands again this weekend, more than doubling its screen count. Coupled with a lack of new releases, the well reviewed summer film should do well this weekend.

9) The To-Do List- 5M Weekend, 5M Total

Opening in about the same amount of screens that The Way Way Back is expanding to, I expect this to do about the same. Word of mouth will be key. The distributor knows that opening an Aubrey Plaza movie wide is pointless, so they’re hoping to build word of mouth by starting small and expanding.

10) RIPD- 5M Weekend, 20M Total

RIPD will fall apart this weekend. Horrific reviews, and a C cinemascore only spell trouble.

11) The Heat- 5M Weekend, 137M Total

12) Fruitvale Station- 3M Weekend, 5M Total

Expanding this weekend, Fruitvale Station will continue to ride the wave of good reviews, as well as being topical following the George Zimmerman trial.
