1) Monsters University- 46M
Animated films typically don’t drop over 50% in their second weekend. Epic celebrated this fact by sliding down the charts gradually, and eventually breaking 100M. Monsters also has no new competition this weekend, so it should still do really well. I’m projecting it really close to The Heat, because I honestly don’t know which one will come out on top, but I’m leaning toward Monsters University right now.
2) The Heat- 45M
Anticipation is high, the film is tracking well, and reportedly is testing well too. McCarthy is box office gold right now, having sent Identity Thief over the 100M mark earlier this year. She should do the same with The Heat, even though the film is R rated, which will hamper grosses a bit.
3) White House Down- 40M
Surprisingly, White House Down is actually tracking pretty good also. The difference with White House Down (versus The Heat) is that it has direct competition from World War Z and Man Of Steel, both of which will still be doing decent business this week. Channing Tatum had a huge hit last year with Magic Mike, and Jamie Foxx anchored Django Unchained. Both of them are looking to continue their hot streak here, and even though it might not get #1, 40M is nothing to scoff at.
4) World War Z- 27M
Basically all the big tentpole action films have dropped around 55% in their second weekends this summer, which will leave World War Z with around 27M this weekend with a similar drop. It will cross the 100M mark this weekend, for sure, in around 10 days of release.
5) Man Of Steel- 20M
After crumbling 65% last week, Man Of Steel should begin to stabilize a bit this week, and drop a solid 50% to about 20M. Audiences and critics are divided on this film, but it doesn’t matter. The film has already made a huge chunk of money, and will be one of the top films of the year.
6) This Is The End- 8M
7) Now You See Me- 5M
8) Fast and Furious 6- 3M
9) Star Trek Into Darkness- 2M
10) The Purge- 2M
