Box Office Predictions: ‘Pompeii’ and ’3 Days’ Will Fall on Deaf Ears

Posted on the 20 February 2014 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

1) The Lego Movie- 35M Weekend, 187M Total

The unstoppable juggernaut that is The Lego Movie will not be phased by either of the new movies opening, and will continue its journey to smashing past 200M.

2) About Last Night- 15M Weekend, 46M Total

Kevin Hart’s latest film should still do pretty well in week 2, since neither of the new films are targeting its demographic. Audiences seemed generally happy with it last week, so I expect good word of mouth to help here.

3) Robocop- 13M Weekend, 46M Total

Robocop however is facing direct competition from the action/adventure Pompeii, and the straight-up action 3 Days To Kill. It might have a harsher drop, though the benefit of having the franchise name will help keep it above the newcomers.

4) Pompeii- 11M Weekend, 11M Total

Not much is expected of the star-less Pompeii this weekend. Tracking is soft, and it seems like the studio realized that the film isn’t a hit, and aborted the marketing campaign. Some people might be attracted to the idea of a film about the tragedy of Pompeii, which could keep Pompeii from completely bombing, but most people will find something else to watch this weekend.

5) The Monuments Men- 10M Weekend, 59M Total

The war movie that could will round out the top 5, likely edging out Kevin Costner’s new entry.

6) 3 Days To Kill- 8M Weekend, 8M Total

I think the studio was hoping Kevin Costner’s star would rise a bit following Jack Ryan, but Ryan proved to be a bit of a bomb at the box office, and Costner’s star isn’t where it needed to be to open this film Amber Heard isn’t any kind of a bankable star, and the plot looks fairly generic. He’ll be lucky to get 8M this weekend.

7) Endless Love- 7M Weekend, 22M Total

I’ll admit that Endless Love surpassed my expectations last weekend. A drop of about 45% would give the romancer 7M in week 2.

8) Ride Along- 7M Weekend, 124M Total

Ride Along should keep chugging along this weekend also. It dropped a mere 9% last weekend, and should hold well as one of the only comedies (non-animated) in the marketplace.

9) Frozen- 5M Weekend, 384M Total

Frozen will remain in the Top 10 for one more week. It’s only a few weeks away from its bluray release, so don’t get too sad.

10) Winter’s Tale- 3M Weekend, 12M Total

The poorly reviewed Winter’s Tale will dip by more than 50% and barely stay in the Top 10. Audiences didn’t enjoy the film either.
