Box Office Predictions: ‘Pixels’ Fight For 1st

Posted on the 22 July 2015 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

Until last summer’s Blended, Adam Sandler was one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood. If you look at his non-R rated mainstream comedies, they all open well. Pixels puts him back in this familiar territory, and this time he’s got a solid director (Chris Columbus), and a decent supporting cast (including buddy Kevin James). Plus, there’s the built in franchise recognition of PacMan and Donkey Kong. Pixels stands to do OK this weekend. Not amazing, but OK.

Ant-Man is gonna drop 55% to around 24M this weekend. Minions should see a similar drop to about 21M. Trainwreck likely will not drop much more than 50%.

Paper Towns is by the same author of The Fault In Our Stars but doesn’t have nearly the star power of Shailene Woodley, nor is it the same level of novel. TFIOS was a way bigger book. Nonetheless, Paper Towns has had a solid marketing push, and will have a really good debut. Same with Southpaw, which doesn’t feel like a summer film. A solid effort from Eminem’s new song for the movie being released right before the film, as well as Jake Gyllenhaal really hitting the talk shows should keep Southpaw above 10M.

This coming weekend, Jurassic World will come dangerously close to surpassing The Avengers as the 3rd highest grossing film of all time. It will pass it, but more likely next Monday or Tuesday. That will put its next goal as 658.6M, which seems like a pretty hefty goal at this point. Jurassic World may have to settle for 3rd all time, behind Titanic and Avatar. By the end of the weekend, Inside Out will have positioned itself in 40th place All-Time, and Minions will crack the Top 100 by entering in at 94th place.
