1) Monsters University- 85M Weekend
Monsters Inc opened to a rather impressive 62.5 million back in November of 2001, and it wasn’t even an established franchise. So, shift the franchise to June, add in a dearth of kids films, and you’re looking at one of June’s best openings. Hell, even the shittastic Cars 2 managed 66M.
2) World War Z- 55M Weekend
The big question is will Brad Pitt open in 2nd or 3rd. I think there is enough hype around this film, and it has a positive Rotten Tomato score right now, for it to do a really good opening. Tracking for the film has been spotty, as the film has had some really well-publicized issues.
3) Man Of Steel- 50M Weekend, 210M Total
A drop of about 60% to 50M is likely, as it faces some heavy hitters this weekend. Luckily, there is virtually nothing else entering the marketplace, so the top 3 picks will be doing almost all of the business.
4) This Is The End- 13M Weekend, 50M Total
The raunchy horror-comedy shouldn’t see a 50% drop, as there isn’t anything new competing directly with it, and the film was well received by critics and audiences.
5) Now You See Me- 7M Weekend, 90M Total
Real magic is getting this film across the 100M mark.
6) Fast and Furious 6- 6M Weekend, 227M Total
7) The Purge- 4M Weekend, 57M Total
8) The Internship- 4M Weekend, 36M Total
9) Star Trek Into Darkness- 4M Weekend, 216M Total
10) Epic- 3.5M Weekend, 99M Total
11) The Bling Ring- 2M Weekend, 2.5M Total
12) After Earth- 1.5M Weekend, 57M Total
13) Iron Man 3- 1.5M Weekend, 402M Total
14) The Hangover 3- 1M Weekend, 110M Total
15) Before Midnight- 1M Weekend, 4M Total
