Box Office Predictions: ‘Lucy’ Vs ‘Hercules’ for the #1 Spot

Posted on the 24 July 2014 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

1) Lucy- 32M Weekend, 32M Total

Lucy is hoping to replicate the opening weekend of Salt, which opened to 36M in 2010. Angelina Jolie is more bankable than Scarlett Johansson is, this really being a true test of her star status, having played Black Widow as a second fiddle in several major movies. Johansson’s star has risen, Lucy seems like the perfect film to make her a bonafide A-Lister. Reviews have been OK… so people won’t be turned off.

2) Hercules- 25M Weekend, 25M Total

Reviews have also been OK for Dwayne Johnson’s latest. He’s not a sure-fire star. Films that are riding 100% on his shoulders (Snitch, Faster) seem to not do well. But, this is a potential franchise starter. Hopefully people won’t be turned off because the other Hercules film that opened this year was awful.

3) Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes- 19M Weekend, 177M Total

Dawn will drop a little shy of 50%, mostly due to the direct competition of Hercules and Lucy.

4) Planes 2- 12M Weekend, 37M Total

A soft slide, of around 35% should occur, keeping Planes in play this weekend. There are no new kids films to slow it down, and it does have an A cinemascore.

5) The Purge: Anarchy- 11M Weekend, 54M Total

The first Purge had a gigantic week 2 drop. There’s no reason to believe this one will stop that trend.

6) And So It Goes- 9M Weekend, 9M Total

Counterprogramming didn’t pay off for Jersey Boys, and there’s no reason to think this Michael Douglas/Diane Keaton movie, which looks terrible and has a lower RT score than Hercules and Lucy, is going to do well.

7) Transformers 4- 6.5M Weekend, 239M Total

8) Sex Tape- 6M Weekend, 28M Total

Bad reviews and a crappy cinemascore should cause a 50%+ drop this week.

9) Tammy- 4M Weekend, 79M Total

10) 22 Jump Street- 3.5M Weekend, 187M Total
