Box Office Predictions: Another Really Slow Weekend ‘Tale’

Posted on the 11 September 2014 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

1) Dolphin Tale 2- 14M Weekend, 14M Total

Because the movie that needed a sequel was Dolphin Tale. The first one opened to 19M, and ended up with 72M domestic. The sequel won’t do as well, because most sequels of this type just don’t do as well. The first Free Willy made it to 77M, but the second only made 30M. The third one did even worse, with 3.4M domestic. The first Air Bud made 23M, the second only made 10M. Dolphin Tale 2 will benefit from being a kids movie, as well as just a generally slow box office, but that doesn’t mean this sequel will be a hit.

2) No Good Deed- 10M Weekend, 10M Total

Neither Taraji P Henson or Idris Elba are bankable stars, but together they might do OK. It hasn’t screened for critics, which is typically a bad sign.

3) Guardians Of The Galaxy- 6.5M Weekend, 304M Total

4) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- 4M Weekend, 180M Total

5) Lets Be Cops- 3.5M Weekend, 72M Total

6) If I Stay- 3M Weekend, 44M Total

7) The November Man- 2.5M Weekend, 22M Total

8) When The Game Stands Tall- 2M Weekend, 26M Total

9) As Above So Below- 2M Weekend, 19M Total

10) The Drop- 1.5M Weekend, 1.5M Total

Tom Hardy’s newest film also features the late James Gandolfini. In order to do 1.5M it will need at least a 3K PSA. I don’t think that’s asking too much, even on a slow weekend. That’s a pretty easy PSA to attain. It might even beat that and do better. If not, then Hundred Foot Journey will round out the Top 10.
