Bowerbirds – ‘All This Rain

Bowerbirds, the project of Durcham, NC-based singer-songwriter Phil Moore, has shared new single ‘All This Rain’ ahead of the release of new album (and first full-length since 2012!) ‘becalmyounglovers’ on 30 April. The new record will be released via Psychic Hotline, with support from Secretly Distribution.

Written and recorded mainly in an isolated cabin hand built by Phil and his ex-partner, out in Siler City, North Carolina, becalmyounglovers chronicles the demise of long-term relationship and its immediate aftermath – with Phil learning new things about himself and his state of mind during the process. ‘All This Rain’ opens with gentle, floating piano notes as Phil talks about how there’s a ‘hurricane in the Carolinas’ before asking the subject ‘Don’t you want to live, like a million years? Stealing all the biggest dreams. Don’t you want to live? Well, I’m guessing I do’.

This seems to be a realisation that things are not working – one person continuing to hold on to dreams, while the other is grounded in realism: ‘All this rain and the well is dry. All this rain, this wind, these highs. All this rain and the well is dry. Put your body down for the evening’. These deeply powerful and personal observations are all delivered against a sparse and emotional backing that swerves between the sounds of Nick Drake and The Antlers’
