BOUCHER SCOUTING: New Offensive-zone Events to Be Tracked in 2013-14

Every year I try to increase the number of events I track. The goal in adding events is to provide more and more data-generated information about players' strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies. Another important aspect of the process is to ensure I maintain the same turnaround time as previous years.
With the latest additions, turnaround time (the time it takes to collect the data and process the results) will remain in-and-around 3 hours.
These are examples of the additions I've made to the data being tracked in the offensive-zone. I have made similar additions in both the neutral and defensive-zones; which I will communicate in a future post.
OFFENSIVE-ZONE LOOSE-PUCK RECOVERIES (FACE-OFFS)
*New for 2013-14 season
SUB CATEGORY OF: Offensive-zone loose-puck recoveries
Why separate it from offensive-zone loose-puck recoveries?
  • Simply to provide even more detailed data about players' tendencies and strengths. Players who are more successful within this event are far more likely to have high offensive-zone start percentages. This event is also a set play for most teams, so separating it from other offensive-zone loose-puck recoveries should produce even more detail about players' strengths within both events. 

Who has POSSESSION when the event begins:
  • Neither team

EVENT description:
  • Player acquires possession of a puck that was not in possession of any team immediately following an offensive-zone face-off

Possible results:
  • Player acquires possession (successful attempt)
  • Player is beaten to /physically pushed off of the loose-puck (failed attempt)

Note:
  • Player being tracked must acquire possession for the puck-battle to be deemed successful
  • Player being tracked must have been closer to the loose-puck at some point and subsequently unable to acquire possession for the event to be deemed unsuccessful

Real-world example:
  • An offensive-zone faceoff results in a scramble-draw. The collapsing winger or defenseman is able to gain possession of the puck.

How can the results by expressed:
  • Number of attempted offensive-zone loose-puck recoveries (FACE-OFFS) per-minute played
  • Number of successful offensive-zone loose-puck recoveries (FACE-OFFS) per-minute played
  • Success-rate when attempting to acquire a loose-puck in the offensive-zone off of a faceoff.

What this tells us about a player:
  • Players who acquire loose-pucks following offensive-zone face-offs are usually the player collapsing in on the face-off. They are often wingers, and they are often among a team's top skaters.
  • Players who acquire loose-pucks in the offensive-zone off of face-offs are usually among a team's top offensive contributors.
Other uses:
  • To separate the impact of loose-puck recoveries from dump-ins and support plays from those loose-puck recoveries that occur immediately after a faceoof
  • To determine how each of the two events impact a team's ability to create offense (shots, goals)

OFFENSIVE-ZONE PASSES TO THE SLOT

SUB-CATEGORY OF: Offensive-zone pass-attempts

Why separate it from offensive-zone pass-attempts?
  • Simply to provide even more detailed data about players' tendencies and strengths. Players who are more successful within this event are far more likely to produce offense. The act of successfully passing the puck to a player in the slot is obviously different than the act of passing the puck to the point, or cycling the puck down-low.

Who has POSSESSION when the event begins:
  • Player being tracked

EVENT description:
  • Player has possession of the puck in the offensive-zone and attempts to pass the puck to a teammate in a scoring position

Possible results:
  • Teammate maintains possession following the pass (successful attempt)
  • Teammate one-times a shot on net (successful attempt)
  • Teammate is unable to maintain possession following the pass (failed attempt)

Note:
  • The pass will be tracked as unsuccessful if the teammate does not maintain possession, regardless of whether the pass is on the teammates stick or not. If the pass is on stick of the player receiving the pass, that teammate will be charged with a missed pass, and the original passer will be charged with an unsuccessful pass-attempt. The goal is not to determine fault, it is simply to track the event's result as successful or unsuccessful.

Real-world example:
  • A player with possession of the puck attempts a pass to a teammate that is in a scoring position.

How can the results by expressed:
  • Number of attempted offensive-zone passes to slot per-minute played
  • Number of successful offensive-zone passes to slot per-minute played
  • Success-rate when attempting to pass the puck to the slot

What this tells us about a player:
  • Players who successfully pass the puck in the offensive-zone are often the team's best play-makers

Other uses:
  • This stat will be among those events used to calculate a player's offensive-touch success-rate. The higher a player's o-touch percentage (success-rate), the more often they maintain puck-possession for their team, and consequently; the less often they give the puck away. 
  • This will also be used in conjunction with assists per-minute numbers to determine the impact of this event on a team's ability to create offense (shots, goals)

OFFENSIVE-ZONE DEKES ALONG THE WALL

SUB-CATEGORY OF: Offensive-zone dekes


Why separate it from offensive-zone deke-attempts?
  • Simply to provide even more detailed data about players' tendencies and strengths. This is more of a puck-protection skill. Players who are more successful within this event are better along the wall, as opposed to those players that are successful beating players' 1on1 (deke) on the rush.

Who has POSSESSION when the event begins:
  • The player being tracked

EVENT description:
  • Player has possession of the puck along the boards in the offensive-zone with his back to the opposition player and attempts to evade the player that is attempting a stick or body check

Possible results:
  • Player maintains possession following the deke (successful attempt)
  • Player is unable to maintain possession following the deke (failed attempt)

Note:
  • Any player with clear possession of the puck along the boards (in a puck-protection posture) that loses possession when an opposition player attempts a stick or body check will be charged with a failed deke attempt regardless of whether he was able to attempt to evade the player or not.

Real-world example:
  • A player attempting to cycle the puck along the boards with his back to the opposition player attempts to spin away from the opposing player.

How can the results by expressed:
  • Number of attempted offensive-zone dekes along the wall per-minute played
  • Number of successful offensive-zone dekes along the wall per-minute played
  • Success-rate when attempting to beat a player 1on1 (deke) along the wall in the offensive-zone

What this tells us about a player:
  • Players who successfully beat opposition players along the wall in the offensive-zone are often the team's best puck-cyclers.

Other uses:
  • This stat will be among those events used to calculate a player's offensive-touch success-rate. The higher a player's o-touch percentage (success-rate) is the more often they maintain puck-possession for their team, and consequently; the less often they give the puck away. 
  • This will also be used in conjunction with points per-minute numbers to determine the impact of this event on a team's ability to create offense (shots, goals)
  • This event will also be used in conjunction with obstruction penalties drawn per-minute played numbers to determine the impact this event has on powerplay opportunities.
