If drinking moonshine and whisky is your thing, then Gatlinburg, TN is where you wanna be, and US-441 is the road you want to be on. Within a half mile stretch of this shop and restaurant lined road, there are four places to get your fill of moonshine and whisky drinking. Here they are:
During our 2015 family vacation to Great Smoky Mountain National Park, I had the good fortune of sampling straight and flavored moonshine, along with some Tennessee whisky at two of the four establishments listed up above (Ole Smokey Distillery and the old Davey Crockett's Tennessee Whisky). While I'm not going to say that all of the stuff that I sampled was good, I definitely had an enjoyable time during my tastings thanks to the fun atmosphere that both establishments provided. Ole Smoky Distillery was especially fun because they have an outdoor area that featured local performers which added to the whole Tennessee Moonshine experience. Though we can't pour you a taste of the Smoky Mountains, we can serve you a sampling of the Po Rambling Boys. Here's a small taste of their Bluegrass music stylings...
A couple of months ago, we received an email from the Sugarlands Distilling Company asking if we'd be interested in sampling two of their latest releases. Appalachian Sippin' Creams is what they're called. Butter Pecan and Dark Chocolate Coffee are the flavors and they are both bottled at 20% ABV. Since we obviously said yes to reviewing Sugarland's latest, let's move on to our impressions...
Butter Pecan Cream Liqueur
What they say...
Butter Pecan Cream Liqueur gives off a smooth aroma of toasted praline and vanilla. The buttery, toasted pecan flavor is balanced throughout each sip, calming the senses. The slight 40 proof burst rounds out into a lingering brûlée aftertaste satisfying even the most demanding sweet tooth.Our impressions...
- Appearance: Tan and milky color, like a glass of melted ice cream.
- ABV: 20%
The Verdict
- Limpd: I could see having this alongside a slice of cheesecake or as part of a boozy shake made with a high quality vanilla ice cream. I could also see adding this to coffee or hot chocolate for a decidedly different beverage. In case you couldn't tell, I really enjoyed this stuff.
- G-LO: While beverages like Bailey's Irish Cream are rarely my drink of choice, that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy them every now and again. This Butter Pecan Sippin Cream is on par with Bailey's, i.e. much like Bailey's, this was really pleasant tasting and super easy to drink. I also like the fact that it's not overly sweet.
Dark Chocolate Coffee Cream Liqueur
What they say...
Dark Chocolate Coffee Cream Liqueur grabs your attention with the scent of brown sugar, coffee bean, and toffee-setting you down comfortably in your hometown favorite coffee shop. The taste of creamy milk chocolate, medium roast coffee and rough cut dark chocolate awaken you to misty morning, just as the sun is breaking through.Our impressions...
- Appearance: Looks like either a glass of chocolate milk or a cup of coffee with an ample amount of cream added in.
- ABV: 20%
The Verdict
- Limpd: Overall, this wasn't strong or flavorful enough to stand on its own, but this could definitely be used to enhance a chocolate milkshake or maybe be added to the black portion of a black and white milkshake.
- G-LO: The taste is better than the smell for sure. Thankfully it's not overly sweet. Overall, this was just ok, and pales when compared to the Butter Pecan.
