Book Review – White Hot by Ilona Andrews

By Vanessa Kay @blushinggeek

I can’t believe I can still love this series even more after reading this book, White Hot, which is the second book of the Hidden Legacy series. It has more thrilling adventure in the magical community of Houston plus the sexual tension between the leads were so enthralling. Waaa Mad Rogan, you got me again. Definitely a must-read!

Nevada Baylor has a unique and secret skill—she knows when people are lying—and she’s used that magic (along with plain, hard work) to keep her colorful and close-knit family’s detective agency afloat. But her new case pits her against the shadowy forces that almost destroyed the city of Houston once before, bringing Nevada back into contact with Connor “Mad” Rogan.

Rogan is a billionaire Prime—the highest rank of magic user—and as unreadable as ever, despite Nevada’s “talent.” But there’s no hiding the sparks between them. Now that the stakes are even higher, both professionally and personally, and their foes are unimaginably powerful, Rogan and Nevada will find that nothing burns like ice . . .

Review

This book (this series rather) was amazing! I became an instant fan of this husband-and-wife tandem right after reading the first book of this series which was the book Burn for Me. And my! Until now I’m still having a book hangover. I was supposed to read this book during my Christmas break last year but I got side tracked, so here I am. And my!!! I can’t remember the last time I wanted to kick myself this bad for waiting this long. Oh well.

This book is really amazing. It was full of suspense, action and lots of sexiness because of Mad Rogan (ayeeei!). And because of that, I was able to throw away all of my reservations and dumped a perfect 5-star rating even if I’m still halfway through the ending. To tell you honestly, I was speechless the instant I finished this book. And there’s only 2 reasons that happens, it could be I LOVE the story so much that I can’t express it or I’m speechless because I can’t believe I finished a book so horrid like that. And for this story, it’s the first reason. It was so good that I can’t think of the perfect adjective to describe how amazing this story is.

White Hot continued what the first book started but much thrilling this time. I love all the scenes that I can’t pick just one favorite. Well, I guess I have to pick the funniest one instead eh? I really love the “agent ferrets” scene, it was hilarious, not because it looks like they are watching a Disney cartoon in the TV screen but with Augustine’s reaction about it and Mad Rogan suddenly secured his house’s dryer vent haha.

There’s so many exciting and action-packed scenes in this book that I’m still craving for more. As I’ve shared above, this book also had its funny-haha moments so there were times that I looked like a lunatic laughing with myself. And good thing my mom’s not around, or she would think I’m losing it, haha. But when I think about it, I guess I did lose my mind a time or two while reading this book. And not just that, this book also had me in tears once and countless of times teary eyed but not because of frustrations but because of happiness. It’s just soooooooo good!

Aside from the story, the nerve-racking action and the tension (romantic) between the main leads, what I also love about this book was the development of each characters especially the main leads. In book 1, all I can see is Mad Rogan. Don’t get me wrong, Nevada was already badass in book 1 but when it comes to books, heroines should really be great or stupid to really get my attention and as for this book, wow! Nevada sure blew my mind big time.  She’s so very very very badass here, it’s actually not just her but also her sisters. So yep, it’s official; I am adding Nevada to my not-so-many favorites list. As for Mad Rogan, he’s still as hot as ever. Just mentioning his name already makes me ecstatic. But unlike in book 1, this book gave us more information about him, the bad and the good – mostly the bad actually. And I can’t be happier about that.

I don’t have any complaints about the action scenes and the plot line was flawless. I loved everything that happened and I can’t see anything that I dislike. As for the romance, my! After suffering from book slump for quite a while, any mention of BS doesn’t sound appealing to me, but for this book, I can’t remember feeling this incline for the main characters to finally get on with it. Their chemistry is so strong that I swear it felt like it came out in the book and zapped me a bit. And yep, you can’t really imagine how happy I am that it’s finally happening! It was sexy as heck but didn’t make me feel uncomfortable. It was just pure bliss. I love the two of them together so I was really so happy.

The only thing I liked the least with this story was the words used. Some of them were foreign to me so I have to long press to know their meaning, I actually stopped doing it when I’m nearly in the end because the suspense and action was killing me. But even with that, I still think this book is perfect. It gave me what I wanted and the epilogue makes me want to read the third and final book of this series now!

I really love this series and it’s really making me sad that there are only three books, but I’m sure Nevada and Mad Rogan will stay with me forever. They’re like my favorite couple right after Inuyasha and Kagome ofcourse, *wink.

About the Author

Ilona Andrews | Blushing Geek

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.
