I’ve been contemplating whether I should give this one a 3 star rating or 2. You see, even if this one didn’t gave me the who-dun-it part I’ve been looking for, I was still able to enjoy it, well, it was actually on the last 2 or 3 chapters.
I started this story last Sunday but I managed to finish it last night which isn’t normal for me. I normally finish a book just for a day regarding whether I’m busy at work or not. But I’ve set aside this story for a day because I just find it at that time quite petty and predictable. On the early chapters, the POV were being passed from one person to the next which makes it hard for me to point out who’s really the main character, but after finishing the whole story, I’m not sure anymore haha.
The scenes and turn of events were quite predictable for I have read all those ideas before, but I persevered until I came to the middle part of the book and then Kat (which after reading the sypnosis, is the main character) were introduced. She’s working in a police department in LA and hasn’t gone home for the last 20 years. Her reasons behind that was quite a mystery which I think is more mysterious that having the police find out what really happen to Jamie. Sorry, it’s just that all were already out in the open for the readers so the only thing that is keeping reading this book is how it’s going to end and what happened to Kat 20 years before.
And speaking of ending. I hate it. It’s a cliff hanger! The disappearance of Jamie was solved and all were now back to place, but now that Kat is suppose to give her explanations on what happened 20 years ago, it was cutoff. That’s not unfair dude!
Don’t get me wrong, this book (even in just a few pages before the ending) was still able to entertain me, actually it was because of Kat’s love interest haha. Didn’t I tell how a sucker I am for romance?! I’m pretty sure in the second book, all will fall into their proper places (I hope) then Kat and Finn could eventually get back together. I’m not sure if I am going to read the second book though, but most first book don’t always become the best book in every series. (unless you count the Harry Potter, Supernaturals and Hidden Legacy series)
If I’m not mistaken, all the main characters or those characters that is involved has their own POV so it was good to find out what each of them was thinking or feeling. The antagonist, well, I can’t say she’s not effective because she really is. A girl who grew up poor and is willing to do anything just to get rich, it wasn’t really a surprise she could do a lot of aweful things, but the one in the confrontation though, I just think it was quite easy. Oh well, she’s up against a guy, so I suppose that’s how it is.
I’m not going to comment more on the main character because I don’t think I have something to say, so instead, I want to react about Jake. You see, Jake was an adopted child and his adopted father is so harsh to him and he was deprived of his adopted parent’s attention. I’ve been really sure that he hates Jamie because of it, but was surprised to found out that he’s not. Actually, they’re close and he genuinely cares for her and understands that it’s not her fault their parents favors her than him. That itself made him to do such an aweful thing but he didn’t really mean it, he’s just unfortunate that he got to know Carrie. After all that happened, I’m just glad that he came back to his senses that even if he married the witch Carrie, he finally lived a normal sin free life. The confrontation part really had me in surprise. His decision of not killing someone and finally accepting the consequences of what he did before and repenting for it was quite surprising or maybe a bit noble of him. So even if I didn’t get the ending that I want, atleast we’ve got to find out what happened to the remaining McKay family.
With a 2.5 star rating, I don’t normally recommend them, but if you want a cozy (definitely not mystery as it’s not hard to pin point the culprit) suspense/thriller, then To Kill For is something you may be interested to try.
