So this old man turns 100. He decides his party in the nursing home where he lives is a bit of a drag as he’s not allowed to just get wrecked. So what does he do? He climbs out the window in his slippers and gets embroiled in lots of shenanigans. Oh and he reminisces about being a part of important events. Sounds like a blast doesn’t it? Aren’t old people sweet and precious?
I chose to read this for the ‘a book with a number in the title’ category for my Popsugar Reading Challenge 2015. I choose it because I like the shade of blue used for the front cover and I liked the title. A book about an old man who goes wild and gets up to shenanigans sounds like a good time.
I didn’t enjoy The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed out a Window and Disappeared as much as I thought I would. It didn’t quite live up to my expectations. I enjoyed much about this book. I thought a lot of the events that happened when Allan took flight were funny. He got into one mad situation after another with his comrades including a master thief and a 500-pound elephant. However, large chunks of The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed out a Window and Disappeared dealt with flashbacks to Allan’s colourful (and not very believable bordering on ludicrous life). These chapters were interesting at first but got tedious fairly quickly. I must admit after 200+ pages I skipped these chapters entirely as they bored me. The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed out a Window and Disappeared had the potential to be something special but never quite reaches that height.
