Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
I was right. The overall experience of this series was a dud for me. I just found the whole thing just a tad dumb. The time investment to read this series isn’t worth it to me so I advise people just skip this series and watch the movies instead. There are very few times I suggest that, but here we are. Since this is the case I will not be warning about spoilers in this review. If you care about maybe reading something that happens in the movies stop reading. If you don’t care and don’t plan on reading the books (you shouldn’t) read on.
The plot for this book didn’t grab me at all. I was just kind of zoning in and out while read/listening to it and my brain has glossed over a great chunk of stuff that happened. I couldn’t tell you what happened in those chunks. Some potentially sad moments happened. One I really cared about and the other happened so quickly I didn’t get a chance to care about it much. Tom should have cared about it, but again, he seemed accept it and keep running. Parts of it did feel rushed and not very thought through. We had a new character name dropped a few times in the start because they have a ten second roll at the end. I think this person really should have had more of a roll in this book, if not the last one as well.
Now character development. Tom did none. He is one of the most boring and just stupid people I have ever read about really. He is also just a horrible friend. Newt had some development, but this is mostly because he caught the flare and goes crazy. Its a pretty easy way to develop a character. This was a good place for Tom to develop too but he completely missed the mark. Newt left him a note and said to open is when the time was right, a note that asked him to kill him. Throughout the series Tom has had this stupid and completely unrealistic ability to just KNOW things. Well, of course this is one of the only times he apparently doesn’t posses this gift and it takes him forever to actually kill Newt and by then he has suffered all the things he didn’t want to.
I also feel that he should have gotten over his bloody Teresa issues. We got in shoved in our faces how connected they were for nearly two whole books and the only bad thing he did to him was make him think that she was going to kill him, something that saved his life, and he couldn’t get over it. I would be all over the forgiving. Well Teresa since you didn’t kill me and have therefore saved my life we can go back to being chummy, just don’t jump out and scream book for awhile encase my I try to kill you back. Instead he lets all that ‘connection’ and ‘love’ just go and then when she dies saving his butt again he seems to get over it pretty damn quickly.
There was some action dealing with crazies in this book, and a bit of political dealings with WICKED, so these things kept the story interesting enough to make me read till the end. However, the huge gaping flaw that was this book is just unforgivable. You know that big question I have been pondering with the other two reviews? How sticking some kids in a maze with no memories, making them walk across a desert, face death daily, and test their emotions at every turn can stop people from going crazy pants? Well, that bloody question never gets answered. Not at any point in the book. We just get fed the same “It will help” line. Yes, but HOW?! I don’t know. Can’t tell you. Didn’t get an answer and it really doesn’t make any sense that it would help. They were supposed to chop open Tom and look at his brain at some point, so maybe there could have been an answer there, but there really should have been an idea as to how before they got the mind wiping, maze building, killing and brain playing part of the experiments.
There you have it. My very ranting book reviews are hopefully over now. I was going to read the prequel to the Maze Runner, but I think I should take my own advice and just drop the series here. If you liked this series, or found the answer to the big question, please let me know. Perhaps I missed something in one of those big chunks that are missing from my brain.
