I’ll be honest and admit that my enjoyment of this novel could be due to my distaste for the previous novel, so an incremental improvement could be escalated in my mind. And, of course, I’m a guy, so Xochi’s effect on Dean made plenty of sense to me. But even when her impact on the story was a bit-heavy handed, even verging into Mary Sue territory, I thought the benefits of touching on areas that have been missing from the series made it understandable.
