Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
I feel if you are reading these reviews of this series, you must have either read the books already and want to know how I felt about them, not come into a review about the fifth book to see if you might want to pick up the series. But just encase I am wrong, I will be discussing spoilers throughout this whole review, both relating to things that happened in the book and ones that came before. All I can say id that you should read this series. While I loved VA more than Bloodlines, this book has been my favourite I think so far out of the Bloodlines series and my body feels like its dying because I am sitting here writing this review rather than reading the next book. Move on now for no spoilers.
The plot of this book was so full on. It pretty much was action packed from the moment we enter. Poor Sydney was stuck in a hole with no lights and gas going into it to make her pass out and making it impossible for Adrian to get to her. Then when she gets out three months later she is all happy because she wont be getting gassed and could get in contact with Adrian, but then she finds out that the gas is still happening. After doing some pretty dodgy things that could get her busted she gets rid of the gas in her room and then of course bloody Adrian chooses that time to have a complete and total bloody meltdown and go on weeks long drinking spree where he doesn’t even bother looking for her! I was so mad, just so so mad. Damn it Adrian, you were so bloody weak then. She bloody needed you and you went off to indulge in your own self pitty. Poor Sydney doesn’t end up getting sprung until over half way through the book, and by that time she has been tortured a great deal.
That first spirit dream they have together nearly made me cry it was so touching. I also loved the entire prison break scene. I had been waiting for it for so bloody long and it was everything I wanted. I really loved that comment from Eddie about how he was getting deja vu of when he and Rose broke that guy out of prison, because this book it pretty damn similar to that one.
I was so annoyed with the whole beginning Court scene when Adrian was talking to Lissa and Rose about saving Sydney. I can kind of understand why Lissa wasn’t on board but Rose should have been. But then Adrian should have just bloody told people he loved her and Rose wouldn’t have listened to Lissa and just gone and got shit done. Book wouldn’t have been half as long.
Oh my gosh, Sydney. Since she seems to have passed on the hat of stupidity to Adrian for the first half of the book, she has become the biggest bad ass ever. I didn’t really like Sydney so much when we first started off with the series and as we went on I liked her more and more. She went through so so so in that bloody place yet she has mostly kept it together. She has also turned into just a crazy magic person. I mean, she has to be one of the strongest witches out there in this universe I think. Ms T. would be so proud! I was a little bit worried about her state of mind at the end of the book though when she was threatening to burn a bunch of Alchemists to death so that bitch Sheridan would stop pointing a gun at Adrian’s head. I did love it when she was screaming “Test Me!” though.
I am also a bit worried about Adrian. He also went super bad ass in the second half of the book using some super cool spirit powers to get shit done. He also didn’t really have mood swings with it either which was great, but the downfall is his bloody dead Aunts voice in his head. I have always thought there was something going on there since she popped up in the story, but at some point she actually makes kind of threats to Adrian himself and it pretty much confirmed my suspicions that there is more to her than meets the eye. Something funky with spirit or something is happening here and I look forward to seeing what exactly is going on with this voice in Adrian’s head.
The Alchemists pretty much have to die. I don’t have any other option. They are just so wrong and the declared war at the end of the book and I don’t really see a way fixing this unless they redo their whole system on how they live in the world. I don’t know if I want Zoe to die though. Part of me really wants all the Sage sisters to come together because Carly was awesome and Sydney has hope for Zoe despite the fact that she is the reason Sydney got tortured.
I was iffy about Nina the entire time. Just so stupid Adrian. At first I was annoyed about Adrian’s mother being there too but then at the end when she stands up to her husband and chooses Adrian over him despite the fact Adrian is married to Sydney warmed my heart. Still don’t like her though. That wedding was probably one of the sweetest scenes in the book however. When Adrian sold and pulled apart his Aunt’s cufflinks to create and pay for Sydney’s engagement ring and their wedding bands I was so happy. I was also pretty much bursting with happiness when they are back at Court and Rose and Dimitri are walking them to their room and Rose is pretty much dying because she wants to ask so many questions about them being together and married but she can’t because its not the time and she has to settle with making a comment about Sydney’s not very wedding looking shoes she has on under her dress. So good.
Then Rose has to come back later with news that Jill was missing. I know Jill is the whole reason this story is happening but I paid no attention to her the entire book because I was so focussed on Adrian and Sydney. Not at any point did I worry about her safety. Not even when that random blonde girl showed up to Adrian’s house looking for him and Sydney. I guessed straight away that this was probably Alicia from Indigo Spell, but I thought she was a threat to them not Jill. Of course we don’t know for sure yet that this blonde girl was Alicia and that she took Jill, but the fact that Angeline described her disappearance as magic makes me think it is. It could have also been the Alchemists starting their war with the Moroi though.
This was such a good ending to the book because it opens up a whole story where Lissa and Rose and everybody else have to be involved. If people knew Jill was missing there is no way to prove that she is alive or dead and Lissa could loose her Throne! Surely we are going to get tones of Rose action at least as she helps people track down Jill before anyone finds and the vote to make it so that Lissa can be queen without Jill passes. I am so excited for this I have issues breathing when I think about it. If it doesn’t happen I may cry.
I think with that I have to end it because this is a really long review. There is still so much to talk about though so if you have read them book I would love to know your thoughts and your favourite and least favourite parts so we can discuss all things that are this book and what to expect in Ruby Circle!
