This B-29 Superfortress was assigned to the 330th Bombardment Group, based on Guam. Named “Sentimental Journey” in honor of the Les Brown hit sung by Doris Day, she flew 32 combat missions from June thru August of 1945. This Superfort was damaged by flak during the last mission, and subsequently involved in a mid-air collision but was able to limp home afterwards. “Sentimental Journey” was saved from the base scrap heap, made airworthy, and put into the air one more time over Tokyo, flying over the USS Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945 during the surrender festivities. In 1969, the bomber was donated to the Pima Air & Space Museum here in Tucson, Arizona. First flown in 1942, the B-29 carried more bombs higher, farther, and faster than any other bomber of World War II. Of the 3,970 B-29s built, approximately 22 complete B-29’s are currently on display in the United States.
