Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress

@ Oshkosh, WI

July 2010

Delivered in May 1945, this Flying Fortress never saw any combat and wound up being sold as “scrap” for $750 in 1946.  In 1978 the aircraft was restored to wartime configuration and subsequently donated to the Experimental Aircraft Association a year later.  After a thorough 10-year restoration, the EAA began their national tours with the B-17 in 1994.  At this time, Aluminum Overcast is one of only eight airworthy Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 48 complete surviving airframes in existence.  Aluminum Overcast commemorates B-17G AAF Serial No. 42-102516, shot down over France in 1944.  Of the 12,731 B-17s produced, 8,680 were the G-variant, the last model of the line.  Nikon D300 w/80-200mm.
