British Airways operates 36 of these older 747-400 aircraft making them the world’s largest operator of the type, with plans to replace them with the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 types by 2024.  British Airways has claimed that the more modern aircraft are 30% more efficient than the 747s.  With close to 700 produced (1988-2009), the 747-400 is the best-selling model of the Boeing 747 family of airliners.
