One of the centerpieces of the excellent Speyer Technik Museum is this former Lufthansa jumbo jet perched high above the museum complex. Most notable is the access to the port wing for museum visitors to walk out on. Erected on site in 2002, this 747 was disassembled and the smaller components trucked in. Too large for local roads, the fuselage was floated down the Rhine river to Speyer on a barge. This 747-200M was delivered to Lufthansa in 1978. By the time it was retired and donated to the museum in 2002, it had carried 4.9 million passengers, flown a total distance of 500 million miles and accumulated almost 100,000 flight hours. Known as the 747 Combi, the 747-200M could carry freight in the rear section of the main deck via a side cargo door. Lufthansa operated 14 of these Combis in their fleet.
