To celebrate the December 2019 theatrical release of the film “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” United Airlines placed into service this special “Star Wars”-themed 737.  The port side seen here has the “Light Side” artwork while the starboard side carries a red “Dark Side” scheme. United currently operates 141 of these 737-800’s. Among the new technologies employed on this next-generation aircraft are the Split Scimitar Winglets, providing fuel savings of 1.6-2.2% ($200M annual fuel savings for United). The 737-800 is a stretched version of the 737-700, filling the gap left by the decision to discontinue the McDonnell Douglas MD-80/MD-90 following Boeing’s merger with McDonnell Douglas.
