Since 1988, Southwest Airlines has used a variety of uniquely painted Boeing 737s to garner publicity from customers and aviation enthusiasts. One theme has been a variety of flags, such as this 737 wearing the Stars and Stripes. Named “Freedom One”, this is Southwest’s first -800 to wear a special livery. The 737-800 is a stretched version of the 737-700, filling the gap left by the decision to discontinue the McDonnell Douglas MD-80/MD-90 following Boeing’s merger with McDonnell Douglas. Southwest operates more than 200 of these in their fleet.
