Body of Proof by Sophie Ellis & Darrell Brown

By Pamelascott

A woman disappeared. A man was convicted. Case closed?

Body of Proof, a true crime podcast, examines the many unanswered questions surrounding the disappearance and death of Suzanne Pilley in Edinburgh in 2010 and the subsequent conviction of David Gilroy. Journalists and TV producers Darrell Brown and Sophie Ellis spent two years investigating the case and spoke exclusively to David Gilroy, who was convicted of murdering Suzanne Pilley and disposing of her body. Sentenced to life in a Scottish prison, Gilroy maintains his innocence. In this gripping investigation new information is uncovered, and aspects of the Scottish criminal justice system come under the spotlight.

It turns out that I really love true-crime podcasts. I was engrossed in every episode of Body of Proof as David and Sophie get deeper and deeper into their investigation. The details of the case shocked me. I can understand someone being charged with murder without a body if there is compelling evidence against them such as the person's blood on them or an eyewitness saw them violently arguing with someone who has since vanished. I cannot get my head around someone being charged with murder with no body and not a shred of evidence against them, forensic or otherwise. WTF? That can't be right, surely? They could have stuck anyone in the dock and painted a story showing how they killed Suzanne. Body of Proof raises some series questions about the Scottish justice system. This is well worth a listen.
