Blue Pig Inn, Grantham

By Richard Randall @aude11360

While staying in Grantham we visited the Blue Pig Inn a couple of times.
It was just up the road from the Angel and Royal Hotel where we were staying, and they welcomed dogs. They had a few real ales on tap, and the welcome was friendly.

If you’re interested here’s a bit on history about the Blue Pig Inn, as written on the blackboard outside the pub.
“The Blue Pig is one of only four remaining tudor buildings in Grantham and survivor of the fires of 1660′s. It is first mentioned as a ‘tavern’ in a directory of 1792.
The Blue Pig, as with many of the ‘blue’ pubs of Grantham comes from a 19th century political rivalry over the membership of parliament (for the constituency of Grantham) between the Manners family (the Duke of Rutland from Belvoir Castle) and the Brownlow family (of Belton House).
Pubs in the constituency declared political allegiances and acted as gathering places for supporters (where a person drank declared their political views).
The Manners family were whigs and chose Blue as their colour, the type of animal chosen was probably appropriate to Swinegate.
Be as it may, long may the Blue Pig remain what it is today, a friendly, interesting, and historic pub of Grantham.
