I never used to be one for sending holiday cards. Once I became engaged to David, I wanted to start a new tradition of sending a card to our closest family and friends. Last year, we took a classic photo with our dog in front of the Christmas tree. The problem was, our lighting was awkward, the editing was pretty terrible (a first for me), and each time I saw it on a recipient’s fridge, I shook my head in disappointment.
Last Year’s Holiday Card (*Cringe*)
This year, I vowed to take a better photo. I am so happy to say that we were successful and I am pleased with how our card turned out. We are putting them in the mail this week! I wanted to share some tips with you for creating the best holiday card photo this season. Here we go…
- If you are taking a photo outdoors, take the photo at dawn or dusk NOT in the middle of the day. Why? Shadows. I want to see your beautiful face. Don’t allow shadows to hide it. Plus, who wants to be squinting in their photos?
- Taking a photo indoors? Embrace natural lighting! Take a photo near a window or door that allows lots of light in during the day.
- Unless you know the exact holiday card design you plan to use, avoid clashing with it by dressing in neutral-colors. David and I used a solid white background with a simple design for our card. We chose cream, grey, and red.
- Take photos that are horizontal AND vertical. This allows you plenty of options when you choose that final layout.
- Don’t feel the need to be posed. Candid shots are adorable, too. Take a little of both for options.
- My favorite, and final, tip is to take as many photos as possible. Have you ever heard of quality in quantity? For photography, this is soooo true. Again, the more options, the better! If they kids are wiped out or the dog isn’t cooperating, it may be time to call it a day. Be sure to reward everyone involved, even if it is with a small Hersey’s kiss or a real kiss.
Now it is time for some pose ideas! I scoured Pinterest for holiday poses when David and I were planning our photoshoot. With Koa, it was easiest to just sit together and smile. Looking back, I wish we attempted a few more poses, even with the dog. Oh well. There is always next year! Check out some of these poses and be sure to share your best tips/ideas below!
