Chatting about my blogging non-routine, part one. Something that I’m often asked about when I’m at blogger meet-ups, events and even by email is how I “manage to find something to write about” all the time. And it got me thinking about the crazy, crazy and saturated place that the blogging community is at the moment. There’s hundreds of thousands of us, hundreds of thousands of our blogs, and even more so posts-wise.
Truth be told, I’m a “trained writer”. I studied journalism and writing. But push that aside for my whole blogging hobby: I adore writing. I love reading. I love having or inspiring a constant stream of new ideas. I love being consistent and inconsistent in my ways, my articles and blog ideas. I often feel that I’m still old-fashioned in my approach and thoughts towards blogging and I’d like to think that I’m a teeny bit innovative and forward-thinking in my actual content.
Recently there was a blogger chat on Twitter discussing ways to stay inspired and the pressures of regular posting. For me, I’m either inspired or I have Writers’ Block. And when the latter occurs, it’s as simple as ‘you won’t see new posts on Daisybutter’. I don’t force myself to post daily, although I do write daily. Regular posting is however you see it. To be frank with you, I would love to have the time to post daily on my blog. My blogging notebook currently has about 4 post ideas and titles to a day for the next month. But it just isn’t feasible.
For me, the best blogs* are the ones that read naturally and that show just how the blogger lives. A blog should sit naturally beside your everyday life, whether that means not posting at 9am because you have to work until 6pm or because you’re galavanting on your travels and can only grab Wi-Fi once a day when you’re at an airport. Maybe the post isn’t all cookie cutter outfit photos outside a imposing, leafy building in Notting Hill, maybe there are phone photos and Instax ones scattered in, maybe it’s a - God forbid - mirror photo that still shows what you wore that day. It’s what works for you and what represents you. (I mean, maybe you live in a Crystal Maze or a Hall of Mirrors!)
I blog in the evenings or write during my lunch breaks and make little notes on Post-its throughout the day. Everything gets spliced together after dinner over an episode of Made In Chelsea, Burning The Beast, Orange Is The New Black or Pleasantly Surprised, and then I schedule it for the AM so I can proof-read it in the morning with fresh eyes. I probably average about one outfit post a week now because I just don’t do enough to talk about, I’ve upped the lifestyle content because that’s what I’m focusing on in real life too. That’s my blogging non-routine.
