For Andrew's A Fistful of Moments Blogathon, I decided to use the opportunity to talk about one of my favorite scenes. It comes from the 2005 adaptation of "Pride & Prejudice", directed by Joe Wright. I watch this at least once a week and every time, it leaves me feeling weak at the knees. Here's why...
THE CINEMATOGRAPHY
Just look at that shot composition. The lighting in this scene gradually changes to full daylight as the sun rises. Beautiful. The cinematography also accentuates the romantic feeling and in the process, manages to visualizes the daydreams of so many women, i.e. a dashing English gent slowly approaching to declare his undying love. Disheveled, humbled.
THE ACTING
It seems like a lot of people are only now coming around to appreciating Keira Knightley, but I was a fan since way back. That face was made for the screen. Such a deserved Oscar nomination. As for Matthew Macfadyen, I think he made the perfect Mr. Darcy.
THE DIALOGUE
"You must know. Surely you must know it was all for you. You are too generous to trifle with me. I believe you spoke with my aunt last night, and it has taught me to hope as I had scarcely allowed myself before. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever.
If, however, your feelings have changed...I will have to tell you, you have bewitched me body and soul and I love, I love, I love you. And wish never to be parted from you for this day on."
Ugh! English can be such a beautiful language. It's a shame it has become so bastardized over the years.
THE MUSIC
The luscious music ("Your Hands Are Cold") that accompanies this scene comes courtesy of Dario Marianelli, one of the best composers working today. The progression of the melody is so exhilarating.
Altogether, I think this is a perfect harmony of cinematograpy, performance, screenwriting and score. The fact that this is a first feature just blows my mind. It signaled the arrival of a new auteur and one my favorite directors. For these reasons, it's my perfect cinematic moment.
