Block 15 Brewing‘s winter offering is an ideal match for Oregon’s current nastier than normal winter. Cosmic Cold Brew is a rich winter stout made with cold brew coffee from local Corvallis, Oregon coffee roaster Bespoke Coffee Roasters. Personally, I’m a big fan of cold brew coffee in beers. I find it makes for a more enjoyable combination than standard coffee. The process it takes to make cold brew yields coffee that is both intense in flavor and low in acidity. When mixed into beer, I feel that it gives the end product a much more harmonious coffee/beer combination. To me, regular coffee, especially if inartfully applied, can make the beer overly bitter, sharp, and generally unpleasant.
Appearance: Black, dark brown head, good retention.
Aroma: Spicy, coffee, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, well aged fruit cake, cinnamon.
Taste: Coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, peppery.
Overall Impression: Cosmic Cold Brew is exactly what you want from a coffee stout. It’s dry, complex, balanced, and very tasty. It’s big enough to feel rich without being over the top. This is another excellent effort from Block 15. It’s been out for about a month, so snag it while you can. It’ll take a bit of the edge off this nasty winter.
Availability: Seasonally in Winter in Oregon.
