In a very tight runoff, Councilwoman Keisha Lance Bottoms edged out opponent Councilwoman Mary Norwood to become the 60th Mayor of the city of Atlanta.
Fewer than 800 votes separated Keisha Lance Bottoms and Mary Norwood.
Bottoms a black woman beat out Mary Norwood a white woman in a tight mayoral race. A race that left many wondering how could Black Hollywood, a city that gave Martin Luther King Jr. his pulpit and the South its first black mayor have such a tight race.
Well, here’s how:
Norwood spent years campaigning in black churches and making black Democratic friends.
Most notably, Norwood was backed by former Mayor Shirley Franklin and City Council President Ceasar Mitchell, who have had issues with one of this blog favorites, current Mayor Kasim Reed.
Kasim Reed endorsed and put his machine behind Keisha Lance Bottoms, from the celebrity endorsements to calling in the calvary.
With Senators Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey traveling to Atlanta in the race’s final days to stump for Bottoms.
Norwood, in the final debate on Sunday, sought to cast Reed’s support as negative, tying Bottoms to the controversial aspects of Reed’s administration, including a reported bribery investigation into Atlanta City Hall. Which Reed was NEVER found to have done anything wrong!

“I stand here tonight as my daddy’s daughter and I can say dreams do come true,” Bottoms said. “For those who did not support me, I look forward to working with you as well, because this is still a city for all of us.”
Late Tuesday night it was announced that Mary Norwood wanted a recount. *sigh*
