We told you last month that the MTV Video Music Awards now have a category for “Metaverse Performance of the Year.” The South Korean female K-Pop band BLACKPINK won the novel prize yesterday, August 28, for their “The Virtual PUBG Mobile” virtual concert in the metaverse.
With the prize, the three made MTV history at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, where stars like Bad Bunny, Nicki Minaj, Annita, J Balvin, Lizzo, Jack Harlow, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed for artists and fans.
Ariana Grande was also up for the Metaverse Performance of the Year award, along with Justin Bieber, Charli XCX, Twenty-One Pilots, and BTS. BTS was nominated because they held the first-ever Minecraft concert on YouTube. Other bands performed on Roblox, Fortnite, and the XR platform Wave. In related news, BLACKPINK worked with the multiplayer game PUBG Mobile to make “The Virtual” for its second project, which was released in July.
Web3 keeps changing the way the music business works
Anyone who keeps up with crypto and NFT news shouldn’t be surprised that there is a category for “Metaverse Performance of the Year.” We’ve written about artists who put time and energy into Web3, NFTs, and the metaverse all year long.
At the MTV Music Awards, Eminem and Snoop Dogg performed their new song, “From the D to the LBC,” which was inspired by the NFT. The performance was accompanied by an animated video of the two rappers, who represented their own Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs.
As the popularity of NFTs and the metaverse keeps going up, we expect that MTV’s new category will get harder to win every year. But for now, the well-known South Korean band BLACKPINK deserves praise for making music history.
