BlackOut Tuesday on Instagram: Because It Could Have Been a Mistake

Protests and demonstrations in the United States show no sign of abating. We have already told you the story and the reasons behind the riots that are tearing the United States out of the brutal murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis policeman in recent days. Many initiatives have started in support of the demonstrators and for the awareness of public opinion (some of them we have told in this article) and, among these, the most popular was the one launched by Jamila Thomas, senior director of marketing for Atlantic Records and Brianna Agyemang, campaign manager in the talent incubator Platoon: under the hashtag #THESHOWMUSTBEPAUSED the whole world of entertainment was invited to "stop" for a day by pausing all the production of content on social networks of all artists. The initiative, then symbolized by a black square published by all on all social networks, quickly became viral and was conveyed by some other hashtags. And it is precisely because of these other hashtags that the #BlackOutTuesday has turned into a problem.

Yes, because the hashtags used to tell the initiative are the same as those used to tell the progress of the events and testify all the first-hand news about what is happening (one of all #BlackLivesMatter): the result of the BlackOut was to put on stand-by not only the production of contents but also, unfortunately, the production of "news" on the events which, now, has turned into a large black wall all the same, clogged, as it was, by the spontaneous initiative of all those who wanted to symbolically demonstrate their support for the cause of minorities in the United States.

The problem is that, so far, the wave of black squares does not seem to hint at stopping and, in fact, it adds to those that have already clogged the respective streams related to the hashtags, which is why, as Vulture recommends, it could be worth the under penalty of "freeing up some space": to do this, it is recommended to edit the post, removing hashtags such as #Blacklivesmatter. This will leave the post on your profile intact but will clean up the stream of hashtags useful for monitoring the situation. The action has no immediate effect, but may take a few minutes.

Or you could delete the square and publish updates on protests or links to support the cause of the demonstrators so that active solidarity becomes, in this case, the New Black.
