Blackcurrants, for me they are not just about taste but smell. In the depths of winter when you’re out in your garden, even in the freezing temperatures you get the most amazing scent when you start to winter prune them. Then through the growing season even if you just brush past them you are rewarded with the same amazing scent. So now with the harvest open us I thought I would attempt to include them in a cocktail creation.
Blackcurrant Burst
25 blackcurrants
50ml vodka
2tsp vanilla sugar (I keep a jar of caster sugar with used vanilla pods in it, you get a great flavour)
Place the blackcurrants and sugar into a Boston shaker and muddle till well mixed. Add vodka and crushed ice and continue to mix. Shake and strain into a glass and garnish with fresh blackcurrants. This is what you get an amazing pink color and great flavor.
Next time I may try to make a syrup with the blackcurrants, adding a little sugar to them and heating them up to intensify the flavor and color and use this instead of crushing fresh ones. Have a great weekend and happy gardening.
