L. Chris Stewart, the lawyer for Rayshard Brooks' family, including his four children, said on Saturday evening that the police involved in the shooting of the 27-year-old black man had other options when trying to apprehend him.
In a video, Brooks points a Taser to the police before being shot. Stewart said witnesses reported that the police did not perform a sobriety test when they approached Brooks at the Wendy restaurant where he was killed.
"In Georgia, a taser is not a deadly weapon," said Stewart at a press conference. "Before you hear their lawyers, who are going to say the same thing they always say, you can't have both."
Stewart and his legal partner, Justin Miller, pointed out that the police use pulse pistols because they are not considered fatal.
"If the officer had been a little more empathetic and a little less scared, we probably wouldn't have a dead client," said Miller.
He added that if an officer was afraid, he should probably not be part of the force.
Stewart and Miller both said that police training needs to change.
Speaking of the outcome he would like to see with the investigation, Stewart said, "I no longer know what justice is."
