Trinity CineAsia brings Un Certain Regard Prize-winning Chinese drama “BlackDog” to the UK and Ireland

Europe-wide distributor Trinity CineAsiais delighted to announce it has acquired the UK and Irish distribution rights from Playtime for the Chinese neo-noir drama, BLACK DOG, winner of the UN CERTAIN REGARD PRIZE at Cannes Film Festival 2024. Furthermore, BLACK DOG’slead canine, Jack Russell-greyhound cross Xiao Xin, received the Grand Jury Prize at the PalmDog Award.

BLACK DOG has been released in China on June 15 and will be released in UK and Irishcinemas on August 30.

Synopsis

On the edge of theGobi Desert in Northwest China, Langreturns to his hometown after being released from jail. While working for the local stray dog patrol team, clearing the townbefore the 2008 Olympic Games,he strikes up an unlikely connection with ablackdog. These two lonely souls now embark on a new journey together.

BLACK DOG is not only the first Chinese-language film to win an award in the Un Certain Regard strand in 18 years since Luxury Car(2006), but also the only Chinese-language film tow in an award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

It marks the return of Guan Hu, after mega box office hit The Eight Hundred(USD 428 millionbox office in China) and award-winning Mr. Six(Venice Film Festival Closer, 2015) to humanand animal relationships since his highly-acclaimed comedy-dramaCow(2009). BLACK DOG features Taiwanese actor Eddie Peng (Operation Mekong, Rise of the Legend), award-winningChinese director Jia Zhangke (Caught by the Tides, Xiao Wu, Ash Is Purest White) as well as Zhang Yi (Full River Red, Mountains May Depart) and Tong Liya(The Wandering Earth II, Detective Chinatown).

BLACK DOG captures the unique natural phenomena of Northwest China, including hailstorms and solar eclipses, presenting a vivid portrayal of the region’s landscapes. Set in 2008, it also incorporates the era’s context, such as the pre-Olympics clear-out of stray dogs and housing relocation.
