BioRia: Escape To Nature

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

BioRia: Ria de Aveiro, Portugal (8)

Last Saturday morning we were up (a little too) early to join a Ciência Viva No Verão nature outing at Ria de Aveiro, about half an hour south of Porto in the municipality of Estarreja. We ended up missing the beginning of the excursion, but our little group was happy to explore the conservation area of BioRia on our own instead, cameras in hand and a dog in tow.

Paulo and I were last at BioRia over a year ago, in May 2014, and I knew I wanted to come back and bike the pathways. The ria is a giant lagoon that was connected to the sea in 1808, a protected wetland area which covers 11,000 hectares and is teeming with wildlife. (I must add, at this time of year it is also teeming with flies! You’ve been warned!) We spotted some of the wildlife and Paulo tested his new macro lens on butterflies, flowers, frogs, and all manner of small things. Meanwhile, Ice got muddy chasing frogs and bounding his way through the rice paddies. I discovered a field with peculiar-looking mannequins and thought I’d throw them in this mix, too.
