Bihar ki baatein

Bihar is an Indian state located in eastern India. The capital of Bihar is Patna. Bihar shares its northern boundary with neighboring country Nepal, by Uttar Pradesh from the west and West Bengal from the east. Bihar got split with Jharkhand in the year 2000 which was once Bihar’s own southern province. Now Jharkhand shares the southern border with Bihar.

Bihar covers an area of 99,200 sq km and has a population of about 9.9cr. Bihar occupies an important role in the history of India. It has great importance in history from ancient times to India under British rule and up to the present day. The name of Bihar is derived from a Sanskrit word ‘Vihara’ which means Buddhist monastery which reflects the presence of the community in this region.

Rivers:

The Ganga River naturally divides the state into two parts- North Bihar plains and South Bihar Plains, all together they form a plateau. North Bihar plain is a flat region and is 250 ft above sea level, hence more prone to flooding. Other rivers that flow through Bihar are Mahananda, Kosi, Baghmati, and Ghaghara. Some rivers also flow from the Himalayan side of Nepal and make their way to The Ganga through Bihar with changing channel frequency. The Kosi River is also known as the ‘sorrow of Bihar’ as it creates more destructive floods. These floods cause huge damage to Bihar’s fertile land by eroding away quality soil. It creates an extreme climate, as it rains heavily in the hot summer and a pleasant cold season.

Agriculture contributes nearly 3/4th of the income of Bihar as many crops grow here in different seasons. Bihar is a top vegetable and fruit producer.  Bihar produces huge quantities of rice followed by wheat, barley, various pulses, maize, and other wet and dry crops. The best varieties of Seed potato in India are grown here. Bihar is famous for various fruits cultivated here and includes mangoes, litchi, and bananas of a wide variety. Chilly and tobacco are the other important cash crops of the state that are grown at the banks of Ganga. Though agriculture has improved greatly over the years a lot more improvements are required.

The prominent languages spoken in the state are Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Magahi, and Maithili. The Constitution structure of Bihar is like most Indian states since 1950. The state has both legislative councils known as Vidhan Parishad or Upper house and legislative assembly also known as Vidhan sabha or lower house. Governor is the head of state-appointed by the president of India. The governor advises the chief minister who is the head of the council of ministers. The police force is headed by the Inspector general assisted by superintendents at the district level. The high court of Bihar is headquartered at Patna which is also the administrative capital of the state and comprises chief justice and several other judges.
