Bidding for Government Contracts in Canada

Posted on the 30 January 2023 by Shoumya Chowdhury

The publishing and tender distribution process have gone through a dramatic transformation over the past few years all over the world. The internet has virtually bridged any potential gap between the buyers and sellers, round the globe.Be it the snowy land of Canada or the multi-linguistic India, winning government contracts for bids is always a priority for suppliers and service providers.

Today, every government wants to be more transparent and reduce the many middlemen that slow the process of procurement. With e-procurement taking the front seat, bidders are not required to go through the many rounds of negotiations and neither can they influence the process by going around the system.

Where to Find Government Contracts in Canada?

There are two legit ways of getting the correct Canada tender details. The first is to go to the Canada Procurement website managed by the government and find your way through a plethora of government contracts listed in the website.

The other route is a faster option and a fairly easy one too. Sign up with a global tender assistance web-portal, like BidAssist and get the latest government contracts for bids listed specifically as per your search and preference.

To search for Canada contracts and tenders on BidAssist, you need to simply go to the website, sign in using your mobile number and an OTP that will be sent to you for authentication purposes only.

Then, all you need to do is use the search bar to type in your query – Canada tender, Canada contract, government contract for bids or any other keyword that you want to search for.

As you hit that Enter button, you will be provided with a complete list of all the related tenders available for bidding. You can use the multiple filters present on the website to narrow your search and save time too.

Let’s learn the basics of Bidding on Government Contracts in Canada

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) is the department responsible for the vast majority of the purchasing that the government does on behalf of other departments. PSPC provides assistance in purchasing everything from staplers to temporary help services to ships to buildings for smooth running of various government departments.

You need to, first of all, register as a business in order to place bids for any government contract in Canada and otherwise. For Canada, you will need a business number from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Next, Go to the Supplier Registration Information System of the Public Works and Government Services Canada (the official buy and sell government website). Here, you will be able to get your procurement business number. This number will be used as your unique identifier with which you’ll be able to sell your goods and/or services to the federal government.

After you’ve completed your registration, you will be able to place your bids and participate in your industry easily.

In the same way, you can start bidding for government tenders in the USA as well. The process is more or less the same with a few tweaks. You will need to register your business with the US authorities and get your supplier registration number which will be used in all the Bida that you send proposals for.

Again, once you’re done with the prerequisites, you can log into BidAssist which may help you in kickstarting your bidding journey in the USA by garnering all the relevant listings for the US government contracts for bids at one place.

How to Prepare a Bid for Canada Tenders?

First of all, you need to review the solicitation document, i.e. the tender that’s announced by the government. Take note of the demand in the tender and understand the requirements.

Secondly, check whether your business fits the requirement. Check if you’re eligible to bid in the first place and if you’re in the clear, are you in a condition to accept the terms and conditions in totality? If yes, go to the next step.

Collate information related to the contract. Get all the required clearance certificates from the concerned authorities and sign up with a web portal like BidAssist to follow the tender you’ve chosen. This will be helpful in case there are any changes in the solicitation document.

Now, prepare your bidding document. Learn about the technical, financial and management sections and make your proposal in a way that it holistically covers all these sections.

This is the final step – placing your bid. Make sure to place your bid in time. Do not make the blunder of missing the last date and do it well within the stipulated time – you will need copies of your proposal, valid digital signature and active internet banking service to make the bidding payment in time.

Things to Keep in Mind

To find tender opportunities, you must use relevant keywords that relate to your industry. Doing so shall lead you to the relevant active tenders available.

Keep track of any amendments to an opportunity that you would like to bid on. Doing so will make sure that you do not miss on any active tenders and deadlines for submitting your bids. Signing up with a webportal that specialises in Canada and US tenders will help you a great deal here.
