Today, Universal Music Group announced that their virtual metaverse band, Kingship, which has characters based on Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT artwork, has hired two real music producers who have made songs for stars like Beyoncé, Jay Z, and Bruno Mars.
Chauncey “Hit-Boy” Hollis and James Fauntleroy, two well-known producers, will be co-executive producers and composers for the Bored Ape band. They will make music for NFT-inspired characters to play in movies and online metaverses.
Celine Joshua, who is in charge of the UMG 10:22PM label, made Kingship. The band’s characters are based on Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club non-fantasy toys (NFTs) that were licensed by well-known collector Jimmy “j1mmy” McNelis. It’s kind of like the groundbreaking virtual band Gorillaz, but it uses a few expensive NFTs as its source material instead.
Successful-Boy is a well-known hip-hop producer who has won three Grammys and made hit songs for artists like Beyoncé, Kanye West, Rihanna, Jay Z, and Ariana Grande. Fauntleroy, on the other hand, is best known as a composer and music producer who has won four Grammys and worked with artists like Bruno Mars, Beyoncé, and Justin Timberlake.
A teaser film for Kingship that came out in August as part of a campaign with the M&M’s candy company gave people their first taste of the music they were making for the project. In July, Kingship started its own NFT experiment by giving out 5,000 Ethereum key cards. These cards give access to unique content and future experiences that will be gated by tokens.
Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT holders have a lot of freedom to make and sell art and other things that are based on their own photos. Some owners have used Bored Ape art for fast food restaurants, packaging for marijuana and alcohol, toys, and fashion.
Not only do UMG and 10:22PM see potential when Bored Apes and music come together, but legendary producer and Ape owner Timbaland has also made songs for artists who use Bored Apes. Also, as Bored Ape, he put out a single and sold NFTs of the music video.
Both Eminem and Snoop Dogg are Bored Ape NFT owners. They just made a record together called “From the D to the LBC.” The music video for the song features their Ape photos. They also played the song live at the MTV Video Music Awards with 3D Ape avatars and sold items based on their NFT characters.
