Bewitching

Today, the weather is that perfect misty gray that always comes with fall here. It’s the kind of day you want to spend curled up in a chair with a good cup of tea, a cozy blanket, and a fascinating book – which I very much plan to do while my child currently naps. It’s also the kind of weather that apparently brings out my dark side. After seeing how enchantingly misty everything was this morning, I knew I had to take photos in the old barn (which I utilized yesterday as well, taking my brother’s family pictures), and I knew I wanted it to have a more Gothic feel.

But after speeding a large amount of time trying and failing to style my corset in an okay-for-public way, because I totally wanted to go with a sort of pirate/Victorian vibe, I gave up, and then realized that I could still evoke my darker side without going full Victorian Gothic.

So I threw on this gorgeous butterfly sleeve top, my twirliest black skirt, and the only pair of dark heels I brought with me, and the outfit was born. It feels… so perfect. Very October. Very dark gypsy, which is something I really love.

I don’t know how many people know I have this little dark side tucked away in me, but you might be seeing a lot of it this fall! I used to write a lot of really morbid stories, and I was really obsessed with Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd, and… well, to be honest, that part of me isn’t gone, it’s just been toned down over the years. I’ve never been a skull-and-bones and all-black type of girl, though; my dark side is definitely more feminine and alluring rather than hard metal Goth.

I think partly this side of me is resurfacing because we’re currently watching Sleepy Hollow (so good!) and I’ve been thinking I really want to be Katrina for Halloween. We don’t actually celebrate Halloween, but we’ve been invited to a costume party, and I LOVE costumes… and right now I’ve got the red hair, so it would be so perfect!

So I think she also highly influenced today’s outfit. I would love to find a gown like hers… *swoon*.

I don’t usually edit my photos quite as much as I did with these, but with an outfit like this, it just calls for some more dramatic editing!

I really wanted to do more photos in the area of the property that is covered in fall leaves, but right after I got a few detail shots, Asa — who I had sat in a laundry basket while I shot photos — faceplanted into the dirt. He wasn’t too happy about it. So the photoshoot ended there.

I am itching to get back into doing more fairytale-esque photoshoots; I was thinking about doing a few shoots as princesses or villains since it’s October and Halloween is coming up, but I don’t know if I have the wardrobe to do it right now! I’ll have to poke around and see what I have, and see which princesses or villains I can muster up.  Well, Asa has begun to regularly wake up and stay up at 6am or 6:30am, and I’m not sure how I feel about it! I mean, on the one hand, it might make him take longer naps during the day… but on the other hand, it means I don’t have any time to get up and do anything before he wakes up. And my husband LOVES to see him in the morning, but uh… I’m not a morning person, and I like to have a little time to wake up before I have a baby to take care of, haha! So we will see. I might be able to get him to sleep longer if I have him stay up a bit later. But at least he sleeps through the night now, very predictably from 7-7:30pm to 6-6:30am. It might just be a matter of getting myself to bed earlier now, so that I feel better in the mornings.

Oh, being responsible.

I think this is the most makeup I have worn in… who knows how long. Tuesday it was dark lipstick, today it’s dark lips AND dark(ish) eyeshadow. It’s a lot of fun to play around with my makeup again, though! I think I sort of stopped doing a lot of different makeup looks when I met Mr. Owl AND after I had a baby; partly because Mr. Owl once said he didn’t like a lot of makeup — and I have since learned that actually usually only means lots of black shadow/liner — and after a baby, well… lipstick is usually a no-go because of curious little fingers, and taking the time to actually do the rest of my face when I’m not going anywhere feels useless sometimes.

But putting on makeup and getting dressed every day also tends to make me generally happier and more productive. And it’s nice to feel attractive when my husband gets home from work.

And also, flower crowns are great to hide five-day-old hair. Yeah, I know. Gross. It happens.

I hope you are all having a good week! I’m super excited that tomorrow is Friday, because my husband and I are going to have an at-home date tomorrow. My mom is coming to get Asa for a few hours, and I’m going to cook Mongolian beef (because teriyaki is our go-to date food) and we’re going to watch Vertigo (possibly, or whatever other movie we feel like watching) and just enjoy having time to ourselves without the munchkin around.
