Best Tips for Moving House This Winter

By Elena @Midsommarflicka

Moving house in winter is far from ideal, but you can still enjoy the same benefits of moving house in the summer months. By following a few of our top tips, you can still have a stress-free moving day and reap the rewards of a new start.

Winter brings with it plenty of bad news: lots of cold and snow, fewer daylight hours, and even less sunshine than we’d like. But winter also brings with it some good news: the chance to move house. Sure, moving in winter has its challenges, but it can also be a very rewarding process, especially if you plan carefully.

Temperatures are dropping, snow is falling, and the days are getting shorter as winter approaches. It’s finally time to start thinking about moving house, and it’s never easy. But with the right preparation and planning, you can minimize the stress and enjoy your new home and new community. This winter, make moving house a priority; check out these tips for making your move a success.

Set your utilities up before moving

Are you moving to a new home? Have you already moved your boxes in but left your utilities on? If so, you’re setting yourself up for some potential issues. First, utility companies don’t always update their billing systems. So, your electricity, gas, and water could still be at the old address. Once it’s time to turn on your utilities, you could be charged twice.

If you’re thinking of moving from one home to another, you’ll probably have a lot to do over a short period of time. There are lugging personal belongings boxes, packing valuables like jewelry and antiques, and doing a thorough inspection of the house you’re leaving behind. But one task that can often get overlooked is setting up your utilities.

Keep track of the weather

If you are moving in the winter, there are a few things to remember when preparing to move during the cold season. The temperature can drop as quickly as 20 degrees Fahrenheit in a matter of minutes. This can make the moving process during the cold season tricky.

Relocating to a new neighborhood in a new state, or even a new city, can be nerve-racking. There are just so many unfamiliar things, like where to buy groceries, which side of the road to drive on, and what the weather will be like. But one of the biggest unknowns is the weather since winter can bring everything from blizzards and icy roads to buckets of rain, snow, and ice. To help ease your transition, keep an updated weather app on your phone. From AccuWeather to NOAA, there are plenty of options to monitor your surroundings and plan for the worst.

Make sure you have winter supplies

Winter is coming. And that winter chill means more than just snow and icy roads. It’s cold. Really cold. If you’ve never lived somewhere where winters last months, you may not realize how quickly they pass. So, before you pack up to move, make sure you stock up on winter supplies that you’ll need to stay warm while you’re on the move.

Having said that, winter is considered as the moving season, and just like any other season, getting all of your stuff out of your house and into the moving truck can be a challenge. Before you load everything into your vehicle, make sure your home is ready to handle winter. Checking your pipes, making sure you’ve stocked up on toilet paper, and getting your furnace checked out are all great things you can do to make sure your home stays warm and safe throughout the winter.
