Essentially, a supercharger will deliver anywhere up to 50% of the HP delivered by your vehicle. However, based on its design, it also takes some power from your performance to deliver the increased output. A really good supercharger will reach around 46%, which is what you would seek from such a component.
What's the difference between a turbo and a supercharger?A supercharger and a turbocharger are different products that source their energy gains from different locations. The supercharger attaches to your engine and spins with the crankshaft. So, this means that its power comes only from the crankshaft, and that is also where it draws some of the energy from the overall performance.
A turbocharger kit sits on the exhaust system, and it uses the exhaust gas to drive the turbo turbine. The turbine is used to rotate an air compressor that forces extra air into the cylinders, giving them more oxygen to burn.
You can use both systems on the same engine; this is called a twin charged system. A twin charged system would use the supercharger to create boost at low RPM, and use the turbocharger to boost at high rpm. This way you get maximum performance at all stages of the drive.
What is a good compression ratio for a supercharger?Since the compression ratio of an engine is directly related to the boost, you run. The higher the compression ratio, (e.g. 9.5:1 or 10:1) the smaller the boost you will run.
Now, to fully comprehend this concept, you must understand that the compression ratio built into an engine (known as "static compression") when combined with the boost you are running, results in the "Effective Compression Ratio."
The "good" window for supercharged compression ratio is around 8 to 9:1.
