How much do I love pizza? Let me count the ways! Whether you enjoy wood fire pizza, New York style pizza or fancy toppings, something on this list is sure to hit the spot! This list is alphabetical order, so as not to give away my favorites. Here are some of the best pizza places in Durham you need to try.
BOCCI ITALIAN
5850 Fayetteville Road
Located at Sutton Station, I’ve heard Bocci’s pizza referred to as the “best pizza in town” by die-hard fans. While you can sit inside, families with children especially will enjoy the outdoor seating where kids can play with chalk or not be confined to a table. I especially enjoy the Nonna style pizza – square, just like my mom used to make at home. Best choice for families with children.
DEVIL’S PIZZERIA
742 W. 9th Street
No college town could exist without its’ local pizza spot. Devil’s Pizzeria fills that void for Duke University’s East campus. With an extensive menu of typical college favorites, and more pizza delivery bags than I’ve ever seen before, you can tell that this spot is in hot demand especially on long study nights. And Blue Devil fans will feel right at home with the decor. Best choice for the college crowd (and Duke fans).
HUTCHINS GARAGE
402 W. Geer Street
A relative newcomer to the Durham scene, Hutchins Garage is earning a well-deserved reputation for fabulous pizza. Every time I’ve visited, I’m amazed by the flavor combinations. Taps offer local and other craft beers. I think Hutchins Garage pizza has the best crust in town. Best choice for foodies.
PIE PUSHERS
117A W. Main Street
Starting as a food truck, Pie Pushers had enough fans to make its permanent restaurant a successful business. If you’re planning on coming for lunch, call your order in ahead of time to avoid the long lines. Pie Pushers was featured on our Lunches Under $10 list as well. Best choice for elevated pizza at an affordable price.
PIZZERIA TORO
105 E. Chapel Hill Street
While Pizzeria Toro has suffered several setbacks with fires, they keep on coming back stronger than ever. Their wood-fired pizzas always feature local farm products as well. With its popularity, you’ll need to get there early in the evenings or be prepared to wait. Best choice for a romantic evening or special event.
POMPIERI PIZZA
102 City Hall Plz
What could be more fun than cutting your pizza with scissors? Pompieri, located inside a former fire station, is located in downtown Durham. Special events, like Lambrusco Fest this week make for a fun experience. The casual atmosphere with a few outdoor tables available, is perfect for large groups and groups with kids. Don’t miss Pompieri if you’re a fan of Neapolitan-style pizza. Best choice for large groups.
POP’S BACKDOOR SOUTH
3710 Shannon Road
One of the first pizza places I visited when I moved to Durham, I always have fond memories. While they serve typical offerings, the French brie and Granny Smith apple pizza is my favorite. The staff is helpful if you can’t decide and they now carry some draft beers. Family-friendly and laid back atmosphere. Located next to the post office. Best choice for a casual atmosphere.
RANDY’S PIZZA
3 Durham Locations
You can’t talk about the Durham pizza scene without mentioning Randy’s Pizza with its traditional New York Style pizza. With three Durham locations, you’re never too far from a huge slice of Randy’s. Sometimes, you just need a giant slice of pizza that you can fold in half to eat. My favorite location is on Hope Valley Road, where you can pick up a drink from Growler Girls and enjoy live music on the weekends by sitting on the patio. Warning though that it is crowded with nearby Jordan High School students during weekday lunches. Best choice for a huge slice of no-frills pizza.
SOFIA’S PIZZA
2201 Angier Avenue
Another newcomer to the Durham pizza scene, Sophia’s brings pizza options to East Durham. Easily accessible by public transportation and with some parking nearby. I couldn’t resist ordering the East Durham with bacon, collard greens and Serrano peppers. Not hungry for a full pizza? They offer slices too. The drink selection is not huge but they carry a few local beers in cans or bottles. Best choice for a local flavor experience.
TRE FORNI PIZZA
1125 West North Highway 54
Named after the three ovens, Tre Forni brings wood-fired pizza to South Durham. Enjoy the open kitchen where you can see your pizza being assembled and put in the oven. The fresh ingredients on these Neapolitan style pizza make them a hit each time. Whether you prefer red or white sauces, you’ll find something pleasing. Best choice for eating in.
